Little Ninja's Martial Arts Lesson

Walking into your first martial arts class can feel daunting, but almost everyone who trains today started exactly where you are now. Knowing what to expect takes away most of the nerves and helps you enjoy the session from the start. Whether you are trying karate, kickboxing or simply looking for adult or kids martial arts classes in Solihull, a trial class is the perfect introduction. For a warm welcome and expert guidance, visit the team behind the martial arts training in Solihull at Birmingham Martial Arts Centre.

Before You Arrive

  • Wear comfortable clothing such as a T-shirt and tracksuit bottoms

  • Bring a bottle of water

  • Remove jewellery and tie back long hair

  • Arrive ten minutes early to meet the instructor

  • Let the instructor know about any injuries or health concerns

You do not need a uniform or any equipment for your first session.

How Does a Typical Class Run?

Warm-Up

Classes begin with a warm-up to raise your heart rate and loosen your muscles, helping prevent injury.

Technique Practice

Next, the instructor demonstrates techniques such as stances, strikes or blocks, then breaks them down step by step. Beginners are given simpler versions and plenty of support.

Partner or Pad Work

Many classes include drills with a partner or on pads. This is controlled and safe, with no full-contact sparring expected of beginners.

Cool-Down

Sessions end with stretching and a short cool-down, often followed by a formal bow to close the class.

Martial Arts Etiquette for Beginners

Most clubs have simple customs, such as bowing when entering the training area and addressing instructors respectfully. Do not worry about getting it wrong. Instructors and fellow students will guide you.

Do I Need to Be Fit to Start?

No. Martial arts builds fitness gradually. Everyone works at their own pace, and instructors adapt exercises to suit each student.

How Will I Feel Afterwards?

Most people leave their first class feeling energised and proud they gave it a go. You may feel some muscle soreness the next day, which is normal and eases as your body adapts.

Common Worries, Answered

  • "Everyone will be better than me": everyone started as a beginner

  • "I'll get hurt": beginner training is controlled and carefully supervised

  • "I'm too old": adults of all ages start martial arts successfully

  • "I won't remember anything": repetition is part of learning, and it comes with time
